Mass Communication Department Moves Out

The dark corridors lay dormant and void at the end of Druin Hall. The Mass Communication Department has officially moved out, and is currently residing at the center of campus in John Carter Hall. The decision for this sudden swap has been on going since the beginnings of the department.

"I've been here for 10 years and my first semester we talked about it," said Stan McKinney, lead professor for mass communication, 'Druin Hall has been a "temporary" solution all along."

Once the new Education Building had been completed, the Education Department in Carter Hall moved out, creating hollowness within in the hall. That was until the decision was made for the Theology Department to move into Druin Hall, and for the Mass Communication Department to move into Carter.

"Carter Hall was a natural location to come to," said McKinney, "We are humanities, and most humanities are on this floor."

"I was in Carter Hall for several weeks before they moved in," said Dr. Russell Barclay, visiting professor in public relations.

Carter Hall may seem like the ideal location for such a broad subject that is mass communication, however, that was not always the case.

"When the Tech. Center was being built," said McKinney," we were going to move in there, but it fell through."

While at Druin Hall, the department was closer together, with little space. The three professors had their offices, where one shared an office with the Campus Times office, while two offices were combined to form the 'Mac Lab.'

At Carter, the Campus Times office and the 'Mac Lab' now have their own separate space in bigger rooms, and the professors still have their own offices. Unfortunately, the 'Mac Lab' will not be moved from Druin until the end of the Fall Semester.

"We're not allowed to move them," said McKinney, "I.T. is."

"The 'Mac Lab' will be downstairs. It's all ready to be hooked up," he said, "Hopefully there will be an overhead projector."

Since each professor in the Mass Communication Department uses computers for their classes, the 'Mac Lab' is an ideal place for their teachings.

"We all want to use it," said McKinney," Jason [Garrett] wants to use it for his classes-Dr. [Russ] Barclay does-I do."

"We'll have to figure out what we'll do for the next semester," he said.

With even more items to move in, it seems as though the department is already cramming for space.

"Space is always an issue," said McKinney, "I'd rather have more professors than space."

"We have three faculty," said Barclay," and if we can keep our concentration going, we'll be pretty good. Journalism is key to a critical business venture."

The Mass Communication Department is located on the second floor of Druin Hall. Dr. Jason Garrett could not be reached for comment.
