Is their an Epidemic of Boredom in Campbellsville?
Growing up in a small town, one becomes accustomed to many things: locations, businesses, and people. But because one lives in a small town, sometimes they grow "bored" with it. In reality, it's not so boring at all.
Many things have come and gone from Campbellsville. Multiple Mexican restaurants, two restaurants of the same name, businesses shutting down, new ones popping up, areas being cleaned up and redone, roads being built, and much more.
"Coming from a bigger city, there's not nearly as many things to do here," said Laura Gilbert.
Every Friday there is always a rush of excitement from everyone for the upcoming weekend. Maybe they won't be working, or not going to school? Whatever the reason, there is a consistency with regards to the days of relief (weekends).
If one is so bored here in Campbellsville, what is there to look forward to on the weekend? No school? Nor work? Well if you're already bored, prepared to become even more, because at least going to school and working gives you something to do. If you aren't doing those things, what else is there, right? Sleeping in is always great, but then what? Sit at the computer for hours? Watching television or playing video games all day? Yes, doing one thing all day is not boring whatsoever, right?
In a survey for the two local high schools, nearly 80 percent of teenagers have four things in common: Wal-Mart, Main Street, Phillips Lanes, and Green River Cinema 6.
Also in the survey it was found that 67 percent of students spent five hours or less at home per week. The main reason is due to boredom or being tired.
Thomas Grammer was asked what his favorite thing to do on the weekend was. "Riding [down] Main Street with my girlfriend."
Main Street has been a big part of out town's history since it was first built. At first it was all about businesses, now, it's all about cruising.
Cruising is the act of driving around solely for social purposes. Main Street, or "he strip," as people say, has been a social hangout since the 1950s. People from all over Kentucky has driven down to simply "cruise the strip."
Campbellsville currently has two parks of recreation: the Veteran's Memorial Park, and Miller Park. The Veteran's Park is located near Living Grace Church, and its primary use is for baseball games. It also has a track for walking, as well as a playground. Miller Park is located near the City Lake. It also is used for baseball games, but it also includes a swimming pool, tennis courts, horseshoes and cornhole, a playground, a three-hole golf course, basketball ball courts, and a skating area.
"I really like skateboarding, "said Mark Bisson. "It gets me active and is a lot of fun."
Green River Lake is also an area for many recreational activities. Not only can you swim, fish, and ride boats, but it also includes a miniature putt-putt golf course, and a beach for relaxation. There is also a horse-riding ranch.
Speaking of golf, Campbellsville also has a full 18-hole golf course available.
When not wanting to go outside, there is always the local movie theater, Green River Cinema 6. The business is open year-round, and usually has the latest movies available, especially during the summer.
A local bowling alley exists in Campbellsville too. Phillips Lanes is opened year round as well, and offers $1 Wednesdays, and cosmic bowling on the weekends.
"One of my favorite things to do on an average weekend is to stay at home and watch movies," said students Sarah Cox.
It would appear that there is much more to do in Campbellsville than meets the eye. Parks, swimming pools, baseball and basketball areas, boating, cruising, skating, bowling, golfing, tennis, arcades at Sports Spot, tracks, movies, hanging out with friends, working out at local gyms, horse riding, fishing, soccer, and much more.
There is more to Campbellsville than meets the eye. You just have to look around.
