CU: Fantasyland vs. Real Life
published in Campbellsville Uuniversity's Campus Times
Is Campbellsville University actually showing its students the real world, or a fantasy land? Should they?
A simple question was presented to an Internet forum recently asking "Is Man Naturally Good or Evil?" Over the course of a week, eight pages of replies were posted, 200 replies total. Out of 100 people: 33% think that man is naturally good or evil, 28% think man is naturally evil, 28% think that man is naturally both good and evil, 11% think that man is naturally good.
Staggering results eh? Just taking the good and evil, 2/3 of people think that man is naturally evil.
If this is true, then is Campbellsville University preparing us adequately for the real world? With results like that, it's hard to argue. Students live in a world of cruelty and hate, where people are always looking out for number one.
CU is a Christian university (Baptist to be specific), and therefore encourages religion (obviously). Many people regard religion as a good thing. You can be happy and merry and praise God and love your neighbor (have yet to figure out exactly what the point of convocation is, so this won't be included).
Students are required to have two religious courses as part of their general education requirements. That's cool. This is a private Christian university after all. Students are required to attend "convo" a number of times in order to graduate. Not sure what exactly it's for, but that's okay too.
The university teaches students about Jesus and his resurrection, but it doesn't teach you that the world can be a very cruel place, even at a Christian university. During difficult times in people's life, you are encouraged to pray and ask God for help. Many people do this, including those reading this piece now.
However, when graduation comes a diploma and loans will need to be to paid off. Perhaps if you're lucky you will find a decent job. In the midst of things, students will probably encounter some pretty disturbing stuff.
Should CU prepare us for the real world?
Should you prepare yourself for the world?
People live in a society where they will do pretty much whatever it takes to get by and to get something free. Students have lived with their parents for 18+ years, and are now on their own. You shouldn't depend on secondary people/places to get by anymore. You are on your own, and therefore should experience things from a fresh perspective.
Does this mean that students can't enjoy life, or love others? Not at all, but you have to be realistic about it. Times are tough, especially when looking for a job. You may be married and have a child on the way and the only job you can get is at McDonalds. This is what happens to plenty of people everyday.
At a very high tuition price, Campbellsville University offers its students dorms rooms, with electricity and television and a laundry center, as well as a cafeteria, which you pay for with a meal plan.
Students are lucky.
Compared to many people in the United States they do not come close to what "poor" is. Students cannot continue to go through life depending on other people or institutions. You have to do things for themselves.
This isn't a fantasyland. This is a world where 2/3 of people think that everyone is naturally evil. This is the real world, and you need to be prepared for it.
